Custom Right Angle DC Gearmotor

The customer, a respected manufacturer of sliding doors, needed motors for their high security doors which weigh between 200 to 1200 pounds.

The Challenge

This OEM needed a motor to provide a lot of torque to move heavy prison doors, and fit into a very tight envelope. The motor also needed to supply power to at right angles to the motor placement. And they had to be highly reliable.

The Solution

• Permanent Magnet DC motor for high starting torque
• A 5:1 Right Angle reducer was specified for back-drivability in case of a power outage
• A door test setup has operated with this motor some 1.6 million cycles without failure

 The Groschopp solution resulted from extensive meetings with the OEM, determining the correct power to size ratio, minimizing package size by removing unnecessary cooling fins from gears, and exhaustive testing of components and materials under the demanding load conditions.
